Jim Jung Creates a Sonic Experience

Every Wednesday night beginning 10 p.m. the University of Missouri’s student-run radio station, KCOU/88.1 FM, broadcasts a show formally titled ??? but also known as Columbia Police Department Family Hour to its listeners. Jim Jung, Mizzou sophomore, runs the show alongside his two co-hosts who he had met from his apartment complex.

Jung’s show fits snuggly into KCOU’s late night programming block, which prides itself in being more experimental than the rest of the radio stations both in Columbia and in the station’s listening area. One way that he is able to separate his show from the rest of the shows on KCOU and in Columbia is through his use of monologues. “We got some raw audio from ‘The Big Bang Theory’ that we are going to slow down and play over noise” said Jung.

Outside of the confines of his show, Jung acts as KCOU’s production director. His main task for this role is to make the promos and spots that play on KCOU throughout the day. Jung said, “last year I was Assistant Music Director and as part of my job I had to make promotional materials for stuff. It just kind of seemed like a natural fit.”

Jung is unsure of what his role at the station will be next year but expects the job having to deal an aspect with production. He also anticipates that he will be involved with KCOU for the rest of his time at the University of Missouri.
